Most pesto sauces contain pine nuts. However, if you or your loved ones are allergic to nuts, you can still enjoy some tasty pesto sauce on your pizza. This spinach pesto sauce is free of nuts and tastes great.

The Spinach Pesto

You will need either a blender or a food processor in order to make this recipe.

You will also need to purchase the ingredients listed below if you do not already have them lying around your kitchen. Make sure you have all the ingredients you need before you get to work!

  • 4 ½ cups spinach
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2 cups basil
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup olive oil

It is pretty simple to actually make the pesto. All you have to do is throw the spinach, garlic, basil, Parmesan cheese, pepper, salt and lemon juice into your blender or food processor. Blend all of these ingredients together for about thirty seconds, and then add in the olive oil until pesto has reached a smooth consistency.

If you feel like the pesto is a little too thick for your taste, you can add in some extra olive oil to thin it out.

If you don't use all the pesto right away, you can store it inside a sealed container in your fridge. Pesto stays fresh for about 2 weeks this way. Or, you can save it for later by freezing it in your fridge.

The Crust

Now that you have your pesto sauce, it's time to make a pizza! You can purchase a pre-made pizza crust or make your own. If you want to stay with a healthy theme, you can even make your own whole-wheat pizza crust. Just be sure to budget a little extra time to make the crust.

The Toppings

Pesto has its own distinct flavor. When you use it on a pizza, you need to take care to pair it with toppings that complement and bring out the pesto flavor. Here are a few great pesto pizza toppings:

  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Shrimp
  • Spinach
  • Artichokes
  • Tomato
  • Green Onions
  • Mushrooms
  • Black Olives

You can use just one of these toppings on your nut-free pesto pizza, or a combination of different toppings! With only a little prep, you can enjoy a tasty nut-free pesto on a homemade pizza crust with all of your favorite toppings.
